          Gollum's Introduction

Gollum who was first introduced in The Hobbit in chapter 5 which was called Riddles in the Dark.  Mainly because Gollum and Bilbo exchange riddles in a contest...if Gollum won he would get to eat Bilbo...if Bilbo won Gollum must show him the way out. (The moment i read that chapter i have had Gollum on the brain ever since. What can I say I have soft spot for little weird creatures...) .In the end Gollum looses in their little riddle game *sob* so he must show Bilbo the way out...earlier in the chapter Bilbo finds Gollum's ring on the shore.  When Gollum looses their little contest he decides to show Bilbo his golden ring. "his birthday present."  Gollum realizes it's missing Bilbo slips on the ring and disappears. Gollum thinks Bilbo has left so Gollum runs towards the exit therefore leading the way out for Bilbo...In the Hobbit Gollum is last saw screaming "Thief, thief, thief! Baggins! We hates it, we hates it, we hates it forever!" (page 68-89)

Gollum's Riddles

What has roots as nobody seese,
Is taller than trees,
Up, up it goes,
And yet never grows?

Voiceless it cries,
Wingless flutters,
Toothless bites,
Mouthless mutters.

It cannot be seen, cannot be felt,
Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt.
It lies behind stars and under hills,
And empty holes it fills.
It comes first and follows after,
Ends life, kills laughter.

Alive without breath,
As cold as death;
Never thirsty, ever drinking.
All in mail never clinking.

This thing all things devours:
Birds, beasts, trees, flowers;
Gnaws iron, bites steel;
Grinds hard stones to meal;
Slays king, ruins town,
And beats high mountain down.

Gollum's Bio

Gollum is a muitated hobbit, not to many people realize that.  He's real name is Sméagol he belonged to Stoors tribe who lived near the Gladden Fields.  His name can be translated into 'burrow-deep' (which could be taken wrong lol).  One day Sméagol went fishing with his best friend Déagol.   Déagol found a golden ring in the water while fishing. Sméagol demanded that Déagol give him the ring since it was his birthday, but Déagol refused saying he already gave him an expensive gift.  With Sméagol realizing that Déagol wasn't about to give up the ring he strangles him and later on carefully hiding his body.

 Sméagol returns home alone wearing the ring.  He discovers his family can't see him while wearing the ring. He uses this to his advantage by eavesdropping and learning out everyone's secrets.  Then he starts blackmailing people.  After awhile everyone gets fed up with him and bans him from their village.  So Sméagol is tossed out into the world.

For some hundred Gollum lived under the Misty Moutains. For many years The Ring was Gollum's only friend, but little did he know it was corrupting him.(not that he wasn't already) That's when Bilbo comes in.  Bilbo who was trying to escape the goblins landed where Gollum lived.  As Gollom rowed towards him on his lil boat Bilbo found a golden ring on the shore and quickly put in his pocket.  Gollum planned to eat Bilbo right away but Bilbo pulled out his sword and since Gollum had not seen any light in such a long time it kept him at bay.

So Gollum and Bilbo played a game of riddles. If Bilbo was unable to answer one of Gollum's riddles then Gollum could eat him. If Gollum was unable to answer one of Bilbo's riddles then he had to show him the way out. Well they both had some very trick riddles. When it was time for Bilbo to ask a riddle he could think of any except to ask Gollum what he had in his pocket.  Which was the ring of course, but Gollum who thought his precious ring was in his lil house. Of course Gollum didn't guess, so instead of showing Bilbo the way out right away like promised he went to show him his "birthday present"  I think Gollum had hidden adgena which was to put on the ring and kill Bilbo.  When Gollum realized his ring was missing he started to have a panic attack.  A nervous Bilbo put on the ring and disappeared.  Gollum beings to think that the only reason Bilbo came down there was to steal his ring. He runs towards the enterance showing Bilbo the way out in the process hoping to catch the invisible Bilbo. Bilbo is the one who gave Sméagol the name Gollum for the clicking noise he made with his thoart that sounded like he was actually saying "Gollum"

Gollum spent some years missing his beloved ring finally he was soon forced by its need for it to go out and search for it himself.  He traveled only at night since he could barely stand the moonlight. He was eventually caught by Sauron's army who tortured him until he told them what they wanted to hear "Shire" and "Baggins".  He was set free only to be captured again by Aragorn.

Aragorn handed him over to Gandalf who in turn handed Gollum over to the elves of Mirkwood. But Gollum escaped and as he tried to get away from both the elves and orcs he ran into the mines of Moria.  Luckily for Gollum he found the Fellowship who had his precious ring.  So he decided to track them. When the Fellowship broke up Gollum continued to follow Sam and Fodo.

He planned to attack them at night when they were sleeping (also since that was the only time he was up anyways.) But Frodo and Sam had been ready for him. After a huge struggle Frodo pins down Gollum with Sting. Sam and Frodo tie him up with the elvish rope. At first Sam wants to leave him for dead as they try to drag him along as Gollum screams in horrible pain claiming that the rope is bitting, buring ect. ect. him. Frodo tells Gollum he will take the rope if he swears on his precious to take them to Mordor.

Frodo soon starts to call Gollum Sméagol (Frodo knew Gollum's real name because of Gandalf) Though Sméagol gains Frodo's trust after a while Sam is still uneasy of him and starts to call him all sorts of names like "stinker" and "slinker".

When Gollum leads the two Hobbits to the Gates of Mordor.  He tells them about another way. A more secret way.  Both Sam and Frodo get somewhat annoyed but nonetheless follow Gollum as he takes them "the other way" into Mordor.

Coming to a location that's more suitable to the Hobbits (because of its streams and green meadows) Sam sends Gollum to find some rabbits so he can make a stew. Once Gollum returns with the rabbits Sam sends him out to get some herbs.  Frodo wakes up to Sam cooking the stew.  He warns him about making a fire in a open field.  Just as he says that men come weilding spears.  At first the men are not sure if the Hobbits are elves or orcs.  Gollum is nowhere to be found.  (he's got getting the herbs durh!)

The next time Gollum pops back in is early one morning just before dawn. Faramir and his men spotted Gollum lurking about in their forbiden pool.  Frodo begs Faramir not to kill Gollum  Faramir asks a few questons about Gollum.  Frodo replies that Gollum does know what he cares and has carried it awhile himself.  Faramir and Frodo work out a deal.  Frodo is to go down and talk Gollum into come with them and Fararmir's men will bring them into their camp.

When Frodo goes down to talk to Gollum he is stuburn at first and complains about being left behind.  After of persuadsion on Frodo's part Gollum reluctantly goes with him.  The minute Faramir's mean cease him Gollum feels betrayed by Frodo.  As they lead him away he spits in Frodo's face.

Faramir questions Gollum but he is being completely uncooperative.  Faramir takes Frodo off to the side (who still demands Gollum to be unharmed) and warns him to becareful of the passage through the mountains.  But even more importantly beware of Gollum for he has "murderous eyes"

After parting with Faramir Gollum disappears for awhile.  Sam is glad about that but is reminded by Frodo how helpful Gollum has been to them in the past.  Days later the two Hobbits are woken up by Gollum saying there there's no time and they must be on their way.  The Hobbits start to make their way up the ("winding stairs") The Stairs of Cirith Ungol.

Gollum leads them to a cave (Shelob's Lair) saying it was the entrance to a tunnel.  While in the cave Gollum again does his famous disappearing act and leaves Fodo and Sam.  After hearing some strange noises in the dark Frodo holds up the phial of Galadriel which shines brightly.  Right in front of them is the gaint spider Shelob.  Who is scared off by the bright light.  Frodo and Sam run through the tunnel only to get stuck by a mass of cobwebs.  Frodo takes out Sting and cuts their way out. Frodo exclaims they should get going and runs again.  Shelob cuts off Sam and moves in for her prey (Frodo) Sam goes to shout out to Frodo, but feels a clammy hand wrap around his mouth.  It's Gollum! Sam angried toss Gollum off him with ease.  Sam tries to stab Gollum but he quickly gets away.

As Sam carries Frodo up to the entrance of Mount Doom Gollum smacks Sam from behind knocking him to the ground.  Gollum starts to curse Frodo calling a "wicked master" for betraying him.  Frodo and Gollum wrestle and Gollum seems to be winning the fight until Frodo forcefully commands Gollum to leave him alone.  Gollum cowards in front of him.  Sam wants to slice Gollum in two, but decides not to out of pitty.  Gollum crawls away.

Gollum makes his last appearance (sob) inside Mount Doom after The Ring takes over Frodo and he puts it on The Ring.  Sam after crying his lil eyes out sees Gollum fighting someone invisible (obviously Frodo).  Sam watches Gollum struggle with the invisible Frodo.  Eventually Gollum bites off Frodo's finger.  Frodo falls the ground and starts to roll around in pain. Gollum spits out The Ring and Frodo's finger into his hands.  He removes Frodo's finger from The Ring.  Then he does a happy dance to celebrate the return of his preciousss.  While he is doing his happy dance he slips and falls off the cliff into the fires of Mount Doom.  His last words being "My Preciousss!"

Gollum in the Media

Since The Hobbit and The Lotr trilogies have been published there are countless songs, drawings, poems, movies involing them. Led Zeppelin is greatly known to have written many songs concerning The Hobbit and Lotr trilogy. Some of the songs are Ramble On and Mist Mountain Hop both dealing with Tolkien's work and both dealing with Gollum. Some even believe Zeppelin's famous tune Stairway to Heaven involes the LOTR trilogy. Not to mention the pictures and drawings Zeppelin has in their cd cover/cases that concern this trilogy.

But Led Zeppelin aren't the only ones who are contributing to Gollum in the media. Especially now with the Lotr trilogy being made into movies Gollum is bigger than ever. On a recent SNL they have taken the liberty to make fun of Gollum (which i think is cute).  So many songs are being made in Gollum's honor.  With the new release of the Two Towers came a song preformed by Emiliana Torrini entitled Gollum's Song.

Onto movies...I don't think i need to mention... the Lotr movies that are being created and released now.  But Not to many people know that in 1978 animated version of Tolkiens' Hobbit was made. Brother Theodore provided the voice fore Gollum. Then again in 1978 The animated version Lord of the Rings (which combinded The Fellowship of the Ring as well as The Two Towers) came out but had different a directer and producers.  Which meant the casting changed. Peter Woodthorpe lent his voice for Gollum. Then in 1980 Return of the King was made into a cartoon as well. Once again Brother Theodore provided his voice for this cartoon.  And that ended the LOTR trilogy in animation.
